Bridgerton S1E5 An Unthinkable Fate Summary

In the juicy fifth episode of Bridgerton, titled “The Duke and I,” Daphne’s nerves are on high alert as she rushes to get ready. She drops a bombshell on her mom, announcing her engagement to the Duke of Hastings and suggesting they fast-track a marriage license. Meanwhile, the Queen is none too pleased to hear that Prince Friedrich lost out to Daphne in the Duke’s affections, as Lady Whistledown speculates about potential scandal.

Things get tense when Daphne meets up with Simon. He’s not exactly brimming with joy – in fact, he seems downright jittery. When well-wishers congratulate them on their engagement and talk about starting a family, Simon withdraws. His inability to have kids is a major sore spot for him.

Over at Marina’s, Colin’s laying on the charm, clearly angling to be more than just a friend. But Penelope’s not having it – she keeps butting in, clearly bothered by the prospect of Colin getting serious with Marina. She airs her grievances with her mom later.

In a private chat, while trying on dresses, Daphne is blindsided when Cressida brings up her alone time with Simon in the gardens, suggesting Daphne trapped the Duke into marriage. Daphne sets her straight, reminding her who’s soon to be a duchess. But Cressida’s not convinced Daphne can seal the deal.

Simon and Anthony hit up the church hoping for a fast-tracked marriage license, but the Archbishop shuts them down. Seems like there’s a roadblock in the way of their speedy nuptials.
